Collecting Isn't The Thing

I’ve been in one place for almost 3 weeks now. Sort of.

Dorset is in the south of England and I’ve had a fun time visiting several towns and cities in the area. I’ve been to Bournemouth and Salisbury and Poole to name a few, but I haven’t shared much of anything online.

Why?

Because I got myself stuck in a rut of collecting.

A what?

A rut of collecting.

A rut of collecting is a when a person gets stuck in the information or inspiration gathering part of a project but can’t seem to move on to the organizing and production phases. This situation is not specific to any type of person but you can know that I’ve found myself there in my professional and personal life, in business writing and in art making.

Lately, I’ve been collecting photos and videos of my travels, but whenever I have the time to sit and organize it and prepare it to be shared I can’t seem to bring myself to do it. (I’m really hoping that writing this post will help me get out of the rut since this post is based on my collection of thoughts around completing or even getting started on my professional and personal goals.) But it’s important to be reminded that collecting isn’t the thing. Even collections need an additional step. Rock collectors don’t just have one big pile of rocks. They organize the rocks. They share stories about the rocks. Now, I think I’ve written the word rocks too many times.

I’ll be moving on to my next destination soon and will also be finally sharing the (much less teary) experiences I had in France.

For now, enjoy this photo of me in Poole, England.

You can tell she’s up to something.

(She was. She photobombed me while her friends shouted that she shouldn’t.)

Follow along if you like and remember — Even tiny adventures matter.
